I had this problem a while ago too, and it can be quite annoying. What I did was as soon as he popped up, attack him relentlessly. If you're in a group with just henchman, this could mean death. However, its the only thing that worked for me.

For me, my best run of this quest involved a blood/death magic build on my necro. Well of Suffering, Bone Minions, Putrid Explosion, Soul Feast, Vampiric Gaze and Life Siphon were the skills I used the most. Though is probably is better to play it safe, I was able to stay in the middle of the chaos for the whole battle with just a group of henchies and manage to survive the whole ordeal.

minions do make it much easier, as the popups start off small but slowly increase in number, so you always have a good amount of firepower for the next bunch

I have only ever done this once, on my MM. I used my minions+putris explosion+henchies. I still died 3 times because the henchoes always died and I had inadequte self-protection.

I've done this quest twice and never w/o dying. When you die just keep going back til they're all gone.
